After a long, but thrilling, season in Formula One, we talk to the team's Technical Director, Sam Michael, about drivers, engines, performance and rule changes... Q: Thinking about 2009, what are your overall thoughts about the team's season? Sam Michael: 2009 was a good step forward from where we've been in previous seasons, particularly from an aerodynamic perspective and in terms of consistency of the car across different tracks. It was a very competitive season this year with only a second covering the field at some races, so it was also satisfying when we were getting an extra one or two tenths out the car at those tracks. Overall, this year was a good step forward, but we didn't end it where we wanted to be. ( Read more ... )

Q: How would you evaluate the 2009 F1 season from Bridgestone's perspective? Hiroshi Yasukawa, Director of Motorsport: The 2009 season took place in very difficult economic circumstances but within the sport of Formula One we saw fantastic competition. It was great to see so many race winners and such close racing from the cars on track, despite all of the changes. We continued to provide fair service to all of the teams who this year had new challenges with many rule changes. The return to slick tyres was met with a positive response from the teams and the many millions of fans around the world so this was very good for us. The story of Brawn Grand Prix and Jenson Button winning the Constructors' and Drivers' Championship titles was also remarkable and it was a great pleasure to be a part of it. ( Read more ... )

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces it plans to withdraw from the FIA Formula 1 world championship at the end of the 2009 season. TMC, which had viewed its participation in F1 as contributing to the prosperity of automotive culture, remained dedicated to competing at the pinnacle of motor sports even in the face of the abrupt economic changes that started last year. However, when considering TMC's motorsports actitives next year and beyond from a comprehensive mid-term viewpoint reflecting the current severe economic realities, TMC decided to withdraw from F1. TMC leaves F1 having compiled 13 podium and 87 point finishes over eight challenging seasons since 2002 with Panasonic Toyota Racing, a full-constructor team. It views its time in F1 - in which teams put forth their best efforts to fiercely compete at racing's highest level - as an irreplaceable experience that provided an opportunity to develop both human resources and its R&D operations. TMC expresses its deepest appreciation to its F1 fans and others for their warm support. Q: What did you think about the new Yas Marina Circuit? Kamui Kobayashi: The new facility is just amazing and I've never seen a racing track like that. The organisers did a great job with the facilities, which were perfect for everyone. The track itself was interesting and fun to drive; also you could overtake there which makes it even better. Red Bull, Brawn, BMW, Toyota, Toro Rosso, Williams, McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, Force India Red Bull Sebastian Vettel - 1st: "That was a fantastic race. We had a very good start, it wasn't good enough to overtake Lewis, but I was surprised I was so close to him. Then, when Lewis was on the long straight, he pushed a button and disappeared ahead, but I was able to stay close. We knew we were a little bit heavier and we were always able to catch him up, especially in the last sector. The car was a dream today. There was a lot of pressure, I nearly went a bit wide in the pit lane entrance during my first stop and then there was the scary exit through the tunnel, but I was on the limit and it was enough to get past Lewis. Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing) won the final round of the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship season in emphatic fashion after using a medium-medium-soft Bridgestone Potenza tyre strategy in a thrilling first-ever Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina. Vettel led team-mate Mark Webber across the line, with newly crowned champion Jenson Button battling Webber hard and taking third. All podium finishers used the same tyre strategy. Panasonic Toyota Racing finished the 2009 season on a positive note with a double points finish in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit this evening. Kamui Kobayashi gave a brilliant performance to score points in just his second Formula 1 race while Jarno Trulli finished in the top eight for the eighth time this season. Both drivers started on the medium compound Bridgestone Potenza tyres with Jarno battling hard on the opening lap to hold sixth spot as Kamui overtook Kimi Raikkonen into turn one to move into 11th. Jarno dropped a position on the second lap but then put in a series of quick times in the run up to his first pit stop, when he continued with medium rubber. On the same lap, the hard-charging Kamui, on a heavy fuel load and one-stop strategy, passed new World Champion Jenson Button for ninth. By the time his only pit stop arrived, he was running third while Jarno was battling in the top six. Kamui resumed the fight, now on soft tyres, and kept up a strong pace to stay in contention for the top six. Jarno made a late pit stop for soft rubber and resumed just behind Kamui, with the two TF109s crossing the finishing line just a few seconds apart. ( Read more ... )

The AT&T Williams team started today's race defending a narrow 2.5 points margin to retain sixth place in the championship. With both BMW drivers ahead of Nico Rosberg & Kazuki Nakajima on the grid, it was a considerable challenge. In the event, Nico managed to overhaul Robert Kubica, but frustratingly it was not enough to prevent the team dropping by a point and a half to 7th in the end of season constructor's championship, but Nico Rosberg held his position in the driver's table. The team wishes to thank its drivers, Toyota and everyone at Williams F1 for their endeavour this season. ( Read more ... )

McLaren, Red Bull, Brawn, Toyota, BMW, Williams, Toro Rosso, Ferrari, Renault, Force India McLaren Lewis Hamilton - 1st: "My pole lap wasn't too aggressive. I was very smooth, and it just kept getting better and better. KERS Hybrid and the engine have been fantastic all season - and today was no exception - but it's the chassis that has really come good lately and we've brought them all together this weekend to create the perfect package. Even more encouragingly, this is all a work-in-progress for next year - and winning tomorrow would be a perfect way to end the season and raise our expectations for 2010. It should be an exciting race - I just want to go out and do the job tomorrow." ( Read more ... )

The earlier practice session saw Brawn GP Formula 1 Team driver Jenson Button set the fastest time, also using the medium compound. ( Read more ... )

AT&T Williams' qualifying performance in Abu Dhabi this evening was solid if not to the team's best measure this season. Nico Rosberg's p9 grid slot provides the prospect of a points finish tomorrow afternoon, but the team will be looking to find sufficient pace on the Yas Marina circuit to defend its slender championship advantage over its nearest rivals. Kazuki Nakajima finished the day in p14, but has kept close company with his team-mate all weekend, and despite a poorer starting position, will be looking to make a contribution to the championship conclusion tomorrow.
